Individualizing Social Emotional Learning and Treatment Decision Making

The Social Thinking® Methodology provides a large array of treatment frameworks and concepts to guide interventionists (parents and professionals) in how to promote social emotional learning about how the social world works to become more competent navigating and self-regulating within it. In this two-part series, attendees explore the use of a six-step decision making template to define and update the treatment planning, as well as learn how to combine different treatment frameworks and concepts within our methodology to promote individualized social emotional learning across different developmental ages.


Series Content Disclosure: This course does not teach about any other methodologies or programs aside from the Social Thinking Methodology. This series goes into detail about our treatment frameworks that were designed for helping social learners unpack and figure out how to navigate the social world in a concrete, visual way.

Series Name: Individualizing Social Emotional Learning and Treatment Decision Making

This second part of a two-part series focuses on teaching tools available for social learners across differing developmental ages. Attendees will discuss treatment pathways for younger students and how these needs transform and change with developmental age and evolving social emotional self-regulatory expectations. Two different treatment journeys are reviewed using the six-step decision making template explored in Part 1. Clinicians discuss how and why treatment choices were made, what was taught to the social learner, and how the sessions evolved based on student responses.

Teaching Social Competencies—More Than Social Skills

The foundation of our work provides interventionists (teachers, speech language pathologists, therapists, clinicians, parents) and social learners with frameworks, tools, skills and a shared language to improve social competencies—more than just social skills.

Our goal is to help people learn explicitly how to engage in social information processing; how to attend, interpret, problem solve and respond in any situation—the thinking and doing skills that will aid them in becoming increasingly successful in the social world throughout their lives.

At some point we all struggle in social situations. Engaging  in a social emotional thinking/feeling based process can be difficult at times for everyone in the social world. Our role as interventionists is to help motivate social learners to "do the work" and explore how we all share social expectations, thoughts, feelings, make mistakes and try again as we learn to navigate our way toward our social goals. The practical nature of our teaching and the concrete way we explain social concepts helps engage people in social learning not only about themselves but about others.
